Why the Quake damaged the Cathedral

An interesting article discussing why a big, strong, stone building like the National Cathedral suffered extensive damage from the recent Virginia earthquake.  A four-ton block of stone fell on the roof!

Questions to consider:  Why do big stone buildings like the Washington Monument and the National Cathedral suffer such damage during an earthquake?  What is it about modern skyscrapers that make them less easily damaged?
